ENG 215 Essay4 Proposal

Hello,

I'm going to discuss about transportation around UH Hilo for essay4 (A letter of proposal).
It is almost a month sine I came to UH Hilo, and I have a problem with transportation in here.
It is my first time to come Hilo, and I'm not familiar with this area at all. I don't have both a car and bicycle, also my roommates don't have their car. So, only transportation are bus and taxi for students like me.
I was so surprised that using the bus is inconvenient. The bus timetable is irregular intervals, and there is no bus service at 5:30 am to 7:00am and after 9pm and Sunday. Now, I have a flexible time during summer session because I'm taking only one class; however, it will be difficult to accommodate bus schedule in regular semester. Because students usually busy during regular semester: taking several courses, group discussion outside the class, belongs to a club, working, etc.  Also, bus service on Sunday is needed because only weekend students have a time to go out. I could not go anywhere on Sunday because of transportation in the past few weeks. I'd like to propose improvement of transportation around UH Hilo: bus timetable and date, increase a bus stop and transportation by UH Hilo.
My idea "transportation by UH Hilo" is university offer vans (or shuttle) for students at least in the weekend.
University's vans take students to Prince Kuhio Praza or Downtown from UH Hilo. It is like a tour, university appoint time for depart from UH Hilo and return to UH Hilo from Prince Kuhio Praza or Downtown.

Do you think transportation around UH Hilo is inconvenient for students?  Why or why not?
Do you use the bus or taxi?  If you have had  problems (related to transportation) please let me know.

I greatly appreciate if you could post messages to my blog.
Thank you so much!!

  3. Hi Ayayann, although I only rode once or twice since I came to Hilo, I agree that there should be bus services on Sundays. If not, the school should at least provide shuttles for students to and from campus. A schedule for a drop-off and pick-up time could be set up and a school security guard can drive. I think that is a great topic.

  4. With college life being so hard, most students want to get away to take their mind off of things during the weekend. However, because their isn't much convenient transportation during the weekend this makes it hard for students. Because of this I agree with your proposal to provide students with convenient transportation during the weekends.

  5. Transportation was my biggest struggle while attending my 4 years here at college. Apart from unreliable busses filled with the vast number of people that inhabit Hilo to the overcrowded shared taxies. My life was filled with such unpredictability and unreliability; not to mention the lack of common curtesy on the public transit system. Something I have come to not to take for granted because of the lack of socially conscienous individuals. It drove me up a wall and made my depression worse.

  6. Hi Ayayann!!
I heard from somewhere that there is a university van during orientation week... it takes UHH students to Wall Mart or Prince Kuhio plaza...but it is not for the whole semester...I think bus and taxi system is so terrible here in Hilo. sometimes I wait for a taxi even for 50 minutes and they never say I am sorry even...
I hope you will make an effective proposal and bring a change! GO AYAKA~!

  7. ahhh the quest for transportation! Agreed that something does need to be done about public transit on the Big Island. Formerly free, the Hele On public transit company has been facing many budget cuts and i'm afraid more operating days/hours seems unlikely. FYI the student life center organizes trips for students throughout the school year. Consider checking them out...

  8. Nice one..It would be nice if these buses serve every hour just like in Oahu. I also heard that starting in August or something, people will start to charge when boarding on the bus.
